Start your week with a dose of Hamlet, thanks to our leading iPhone app, Hamlet in Bits. The app brings you all kinds of information that helps to understand Shakespeare?s play, including audio and animated performances and the text to go with it. We?ve also got a big update to Fanhattan, which can help you find new shows and movies to watch on Netflix, iTunes, Hulu and more. Hank Hazard, a physics-based puzzle game about a daredevil hamster, will keep your thumbs busy this week, as will turn-based strategy title RoboHero.

You?ll want to check out Hamlet in Bits, an education app that packs of wealth of resources about the play including a complete, unabridged original version that you can read right on your iPhone or iPad.

Hamlet in Bits also includes three hours of professional audio recordings of performances of Hamlet, as well as animations showing the play?s various scenes. You?ll be able to read along with the text as you watch or listen to the dialog being spoken, and Hamlet in Bits also includes character biographies to keep you up to speed with who?s who in Shakespeare?s tale of murderous intrigue. The app even includes a character relationship map, so you?ll never lose track of why characters are important or what?s going on in the twisting narrative.

Entertainment app Fanhattan is a portal for discovering new movies and TV shows across a variety of services including Hulu, Netflix, Lifetime, Crackle, iTunes and PBS. When you fire up the app, you?re greeted with a list of popular new content from the services you use. You can also find more by searching by directors, actors, titles and more; then, Fanhattan provides you other choices you might like based on the things you?re already into.

Fanhattan just got a big update that adds more news services to the app?s content choices. You can see what?s going in the latest entertainment news with the new Fan Feed feature, and from that news you can find new entertainment to enjoy, like TV shows or movies that are garnering a lot of attention (or just got nominated for Oscars). You can also favorite stories, directors, actors, shows and movies to find more content that includes them, making Fan Feed smarter and bringing you even more stuff you?ll enjoy.

Daredevil hamster Hank Hazard needs to show off his stuff, earn points and become the greatest daredevil (hamster) ever. So you?ll need to help him through level after physics-based level, popping bubbles and carefully maneuvering Hank through each puzzle in Hank Hazard, grabbing all stars in each stage before reaching a goal. It?s standard fare for physics-based puzzle titles, but Hank Hazard brings in its own feel and some solid level design to a crowded field.

Each stage in Hank Hazard requires you to meet a special requirement to get a bonus ?nut? that kicks up your score. In some levels, you?ll want to finish as quickly as you can to beat a timer. In others, it?ll be the number of ?moves? (like taps or actions where you manipulate the level) you need to keep to a minimum. This adds a little bit of variety to each of Hank Hazard?s levels, plus something to strive for to help you climb the game?s leaderboards, care of Game Center.

Once you?ve planned out each round?s moves, you?ll hit the play button to put your robot into motion. Strong planning is the key to keeping him from getting turned into scrap.

RoboHero packs 30 levels and three gameplay modes, most of which his free (after the first 10 levels, you?ll need to purchase the full game through an in-app purchase of $1.99). 13 JanSiri Creators Nuance Communications Create Dragon Go! For …

Android users have been clamoring for a premium?Siri-type program to grace Android devices. Sure we?ve seen an alternative here and another one there, but it seems as though users have wished for the minds behind Siri to come out and develop something for Android officially, not just any developer. Users? wishes and prayers have been answered as Nuance Communications? the same developers behind Siri? have created a personal assistant app exclusively for Android users called Dragon Go!?Nuance Communications outlined it best when it comes to the purpose of Dragon Go!:

?With Dragon Go! you can do more in less time like buy movie tickets as you walk into the theater, go shopping at local boutiques while you wait for your nails to dry, settle a bet at the breakfast table on the square root of Pi, or plan and invite guests to that night?s happy hour ? all with just one ask of Dragon Go!?

It?s pretty straightforward too. Just ask it a question and the app will use its servers to provide a solution. Heck Dragon Go!?will direct you to services that provide streaming media, social networking, shopping and other online content such as Spotify, Wolfram|Alpha, Yelp, YouTube, AccuWeather, Ask.com, Dictionary.com, ESPN, Facebook, Fandango, Last.fm, Pandora and Twitter.

The app is available for free?for owners of any Android 2.1+ device. If you want to see the app in action before you download it, checkout the video below and then scoot over to the Android Market link or use the QR code to be on your way to having more productivity after the break.

16 DecMcAfee Family Protection Android Edition

McAfee Family Protection (MFP) is a lightweight, user friendly content filtering app that lets parents control what their children click into through their mobile Web browsers.? It does everything it claims to, and does it well, but it doesn’t aim particularly high?especially given its price tag. You can use the app free for 30 days, after which you?ll need to pay $19.99 for a one-year subscription. MFP supports devices with Android 2.1 and up.

MFP performs three basic functions well, but could have earned a higher rating if took parental control further like many of its rivals.

  • MFP hooks up to your default mobile browser and blocks websites based on age category or a customized list.
  • It blocks access to other browsers, so the only browser available is the one being filtered.
  • It resists uninstallation.

Those are all useful features, but they don’t add up to a whole lot compared to other parental control apps, some of which cost much less. For instance, Norton Online Family To Go Beta (Free) and PhoneSheriff ($49.97 direct)?lets you schedule times when phone calls are allowed. PhoneSheriff also blocks certain apps and phone functions. Mobicip Safe Browser Premium ($9.99/year direct)?forces you to use a safe search. For a bit more, Trend Micro Mobile Security for Android ($29.99 direct) offers parental controls and blocks phishing web sites.

Blocks Porn, Gambling sites, Social Networking, and More
Setup in MFP is very easy. As the administrator, you can sync up to five mobile devices, one for each child. Start by selecting a user and his or her age range, either Children (7-12 years), Teens (13-17 years), Adults (18+ years), or Custom (for which you can select among 35 categories, such as ?gambling,? ?lingerie,? or ?murder/suicide.?) The feature prevents access to forbidden websites based on age-appropriateness.

It doesn?t actually block the search results, just prevents a user from clicking through to the results. So when I performed a Google search for ?boobs? I saw all the search results, I just couldn?t click into any of them. It?d be nice if this app blocked other inappropriate apps as well, many of which are ubiquitous and free to download in the Android Market.?

Blocks Access to Other Browsers
Once MFP is installed, you can only use the phone?s default browser. I hate the default browser on our test phone, the Samsung Captivate, so I felt this feature greatly detracted from the experience of using my phone. I’d prefer that the app either worked with all browsers or at least some of the better 3rd-party browsers, such as Dolphin Browser HD.

Resists Uninstallation
This feature prevents your child from uninstalling the app, by requiring the admin login to adjust any settings. Trust me, they?re going to try to uninstall the app thanks to that default browser lock-in.

McAfee Family Protection Android Edition is a decent, user-friendly content filtering app, but other family protection apps we?ve looked do more for less than MPF?s $19.99/year. Stay tuned: we?ll be reviewing more of these mobile parental control applications in the near future. ?

14 JulFresh iPhone Apps for July 12: Molenotes, PipClock, The Blocks Cometh update, Matchlings (Appolicious)

Snag a new way to take notes and a new way to tell time with today?s Fresh iPhone Apps list. Molenotes is our headliner, which gives you note-taking on your iPhone but with an analog, notebook-in-hand feel. Following that is PipClock, an app that?ll make iPhone-owning fans of the video game series Fallout pretty happy because it?s modeled after technology from the post-apocalyptic role-playing game. In games, the fun climb-as-high-as-you-can indie title The Blocks Cometh just receive a big update and a price cut, while Matchlings reworks the familiar match-three genre.

Note-taking app Molenotes is meant to make taking virtual notes on your iPhone feel like writing them in a more traditional, permanent notebook. It divides your notes by category with tabs as if you were writing them down on paper, and lets you choose from handwriting, typewriter style or academic type-set for your information.

As you use them, you?ll keep your virtual Molenotes notebooks on its virtual wooden shelf, so you can choose which one to ?take out? and write in when you have an idea, which helps to keep things even more organized. The app also features Dropbox support, so you can save your ideas to the cloud and access them later.

PipClock (iPhone, iPad) $0.99

Inspired by the Fallout video game series, which is set in a post-apocalyptic nuclear wasteland, PipClock is meant to emulate a tool from the game called the PipBoy that provides wastelanders with all the information they need to survive. PipClock brings weather and time information to app users, along with cool peripheral things like a (fake) Geiger counter and (fake) fallout readings every day.

PipClock also includes other cool Fallout-themed information. It uses your iPhone?s GPS to zero-in on your location and give you game-themed tips about it, and also provides Wasteland news, a compass, information about nearby landmarks and all kinds of other stuff.

A big content update to Halfbot?s iOS port of its well-received Flash game, The Blocks Cometh, has just come down the pipe to the App Store ? and with it come new ways to play. The core gameplay remains the same: Huge blocks fall from the top of the screen toward the bottom, and players have to dodge them while climbing ever higher. The higher you get, the better your score, which is tracked on Blocks? Game Center leaderboards.

In the new update is a set of four new characters and a new display mode that are available through in-app purchase. You can now play the game in landscape mode, which a lot of players were asking for, and Halfbot has added more to the soundtrack and more achievements to earn along the way. They?ve also cut the price in half, so if you haven?t picked up The Blocks Cometh yet, you definitely should now.

Matchlings (iPhone, iPad) $0.99

There are tons of match-three style games in the App Store, taking advantage of the insane popularity of games such as PopCap?s Bejeweled. With so many games that offer pretty much the same experience, it comes down to the game?s personality, and Matchlings has quite a bit of personality to go around. Instead of moving jewels around a grid-based game screen, you move little characters called matchlings that disappear for points when you make a horizontal or vertical line of three of the same.

Matchlings includes four game modes, including an endless mode, a speed mode and a level-based mode, and has a few extra things that make it stand out from the horde of similar games in the App Store. As you make combinations and score points, you?ll earn stars that allow you to activate some of the Matchlings? special abilities ? like converting some characters into others or clearing out all of one kind.
